Whiplash and worry
It is one of those mysteries that continues to baffle insurers, personal injury lawyers and medical experts. Why do some people seem to seem to recover from whiplash relatively quickly, while for others the injury will ail them for months or even years following an accident?
Yet it seems that the answer to this question may be quite simple. Aside from age and general physical health-related factors, the other significant influence on whiplash recovery times could have a psychological explanation.
One important study carried out by the International Underwriting Association for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) found that around 30% of people do not recover from "minor" injuries within normal time spans because of psychological illnesses such as depression.
The report cut straight to the crux and suggested that its findings may explain why some claims for hyperflexion neck injuries are settled quickly and clearly, while others (usually those made by chronic sufferers) take much longer to resolve, incurring weightier legal fees and resulting in larger settlements.
A chief executive from the Motor Insurers Bureau who fronted the research panel comments, "It is important to bear in mind that it could become considerably worse for perfectly genuine psychological reasons.
"Recognising these cases early and delivering appropriate interventions can prevent them from becoming unduly expensive."
