Syringomyelia may result from whiplash injury

While whiplash is often considered as a minor personal injury by those who have not suffered from it, the term actually covers a spectrum of seriousness. Among the most serious repercussions from this neck injury is syringomyelia.

This is a serious condition where a small, liquid-filled cyst (or "syrinx") develops within the spinal cord, which can cause numbness, pain, and can go on to destroy the spinal cord. It can be a genetic condition, or it can be caused by trauma to the back, such as may be suffered in a car crash or any other type of accident that may induce a whiplash injury.

Diagnosis of the syrinx is normally performed with an MRI examination, electromyography (EMG) and / or a lumbar puncture. A myelogram may also be considered, but this is rarely used since the invention of MRI processes. Of course, a medical professional must recognise that the neck injury may have caused this condition from symptoms such as pain, muscle loss or decreased sensitivity before such tests are requested.

Treatment of the condition depends on whether a doctor believes the condition will develop. If the cyst is unlikely to grow, the symptoms may be addressed with methods as simple as painkillers. If, however, a doctor believes the condition is worsening, or may do so, surgery may be advisable to drain the cyst. This can be a risky procedure, and medical advice is strongly recommended.
