The status of whiplash as a neck injury, often resulting from a car accident, is well known; what is less familiar is that it can result in what is known as retinopathy, where the eyes of a sufferer are damaged.
Retinopathy is simply a word that means there is a problem with the retina, and is generally not used for inflammation; in a whiplash compensation claim, it would tend to mean that the hyperflexion movement that can cause personal injury to the neck may have put significant forces on the nerve cells at the back of the eye that transform light into vision.
The methods by which this occurs are still under debate in the medical sciences, with proponents of mechanical forces and vascular forces (ie the shock of the car crash or the pressures in the eyeball) and some arguing for a mixed model. Whatever its actual mechanism, however, it is a recognised side effect that whiplash claimants may suffer from.
This should not dissuade car crash survivors from going to their GP if a loss of sight or a blind spot develops; on the one hand, the doctor may be able to help, and on the other, retinopathy can be a symptom of several other conditions, such as diabetes, liver disease or Meckel-Gruber syndrome, which could simply have coincided with a diagnosis of whiplash injury.
