Whiplash, neck pain and other disorders

When you experience neck pain you may not necessarily have a neck injury such as whiplash. Although 80% of people involved in vehicle accidents sustain this particular neck injury, you do not necessarily develop whiplash if you have been involved in a road accident. There are a number of explanations for symptoms that are commonly confused with those of whiplash injuries.

Neck pain can range from a sharp pain, which makes it known immediately after an injury has occurred but will only last temporarily, to a more persistent, longer-lasting problem.

There are a range of varied treatments for neck pain including traditional techniques such as pain killers and surgery and complimentary therapies such as acupuncture and massage therapy. However, the appropriate treatment very much depends on the route of the pain.

Types of neck pain
There are many explanations for neck pain which are regularly diagnosed by medical professionals in the UK. These include:

  • Muscle strains: you can strain your neck muscles through overusing them at work. For example, people that sit at computer desks for much of the day or drive for long hours may strain their neck muscles easily. They can also become tightened and strained through excess worry and stress. Regular relaxation exercises can help ease tension in the neck and ease any resulting neck pain. However, continuous muscle strain can cause chronic neck pain.
  • Pinched nerves: when the discs herniate due to muscle strain or the discs become too dry and space is constricted in the spinal column, the nerves can become irritated and result in acute neck pain that may be temporary but recur regularly.
  • Osteoarthritis: the neck joints can deteriorate quickly with age and cause arthritis. Osteoarthritis can initiate a breakdown in cartilage which weakens discs and causes the development of bony growths which make the neck very stiff and painful to move.
