There is plenty of evidence to suggest that whiplash may cause memory impairment. Although, aside from the most chronic cases, it is not always possible to claim compensation for loss of memory, the experience of many claimants would imply that it should sometimes be viewed as an important component.
This is a view increasingly supported by science. Indeed, one study, by B Schmand, J Lindeboom, S Schagen, R Heijt, T Koene, and H Hamburger; Department of Psychology, Slotervaartziekenhuis, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, confirms that there is a significant level of memory impairment in patients following a whiplash injury.
Using the Amsterdam Short Term Memory (ASTM) test in conjunction with a series of other cognitive and memory tests, the scientists studied the memory performance of two groups: those with the neck injury who were in the process of making a compensation claim (group A) and those with the neck injury who were not (group B).
Tellingly, with a higher score indicating a more significant level of impairment, group A scored 61% and group B scored 29%.
Amazingly, the scores of those in group A were comparable to those of patients with closed head injury who undertook the same test.
In fact, this study has been supported by others such as one reported in Acta neurologica scandinavica in 1995, which showed that even two years after a car accident, the hyperflexion injury resulted in some level of impaired memory.

Following a car crash, some insurers may contact the claimant to offer quick and early settlement. However, it is not always a good idea to accept these offers; instead, it is always worth seeking legal advice to determine just how much compensation you might be entitled to.
