When a whiplash injury claim is in progress, it is often based on the cost, pain and loss of amenity that has been caused in a car accident, or other misfortune. However, there are occasions when tinnitus can be one of the symptoms of the condition.
There are various theories why this should be, and potentially various methods through which a claimant could suffer this kind of hearing loss. One, of course, is just from the noise of a crash, or the cutting equipment used to free him or her if such a rescue was necessary. In this case, the two conditions are simply occurring simultaneously, having a common cause, but are not connected.
This does not seem to explain every case, however. Although the mechanism does not seem to be fully understood, there are several cases where ringing in the ears is related to the neck injury itself. Jaw alignment being affected has been suggested as a possible cause, as has earwax occlusion, but neither is uniformly accepted as the reason for having hearing symptoms in a whiplash neck injury.
As is common for methods of treatment for both whiplash and tinnitus, there are various ways of dealing with the simultaneous occurrence of both symptoms, varying from trusting it to go away on one hand to the active involvement of a cranial osteopath on the other. A person suffering from a hyperflexion injury that has caused hearing problems should be able to discuss this with his or her GP and find out which treatment is best in that specific case.
Including tinnitus in a whiplash injury claim
If you have suffered whiplash, whether in a car accident or some other form of mishap, you may well be eligible to claim compensation for its effects on your life. If tinnitus is one of those effects, and has affected your abilities to work or engage in other activities, there is potential for that to be included in the claim.
