Whiplash injury hits the soft tissues of the neck

On receiving a whiplash injury, whether through a car accident or some other incident involving hyperflexion of the neck, a sufferer will discover that he or she has received an injury to the soft tissues of the body, the muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Muscles are generally well understood, but ligaments and tendons are less well so. These forms of tissue in a human body are connectives, linking bones together or to muscles, and therefore are central to keeping a human form together.

Tendons are the tissues that link bones to muscles. They share collagen fibres with the muscle at one end, which grow mineralised as they join the bone at a site called an 'enthesis'. Their strength and size appears to be determined genetically.

Ligaments, on the other hand, join bone to bone. There are also some unrelated structures in the body known as ligaments, relating to internal membranes and 'leftovers' from foetal development; the ligaments relevant here are therefore sometimes known as 'articular' or 'true' ligaments.

As the neck is a highly complex group of small bones and muscles relied upon to support the weight of the head while remaining highly flexible, it is clear that receiving even a small personal injury to these soft tissues may well cause pain and incapacitate a sufferer.
