Whiplash claims and recovery
If you are considering making a whiplash claim, you may well have been involved in a car crash. Road traffic accidents, and car crashes in particular, are the reason behind the vast majority of whiplash injury compensation claims made in the UK. Whilst rear-end car accidents are the most common cause of whiplash, side-on and head-on collisions can both also result in the uncomfortable neck injury.
Whiplash injuries can result from even the most minor car accidents; the 5mph shunt in the supermarket car park or the low speed, rear-end collision at the approach to a roundabout. Unfortunately, whilst these crashes might not appear to have caused serious damage on the surface, underneath there can be a lengthy period of discomfort ahead for those involved.
Whiplash hospital study
The length of time from which someone suffers from whiplash can vary quite dramatically. Whilst most people will suffer the characteristic stiff, painful neck for a matter of days or weeks, others who will usually go on to make a whiplash claim for compensation display symptoms for months or even years.
The outcome of 2006 research into the factors which determine how long a whiplash injury will endure has recently been released by the University of Southampton. The study looked at 200 patients who were diagnosed with Whiplash-Associated Disorder after attending a UK A&E department.
The researchers found that people who complained of midline pain and requested x-rays tended to report more pain from their neck injury at a follow up appointment. It also found that older patients were more likely to have a higher pain rating when they attended the later appointment.
With the study showing that two thirds of whiplash patients were still reporting pain four to six weeks after the initial car accident, the researchers conclude that their work "identifies that there is significant disability associated with whiplash associated disorder."
