Sufferers claiming whiplash compensation may prolong symptoms by visiting doctor
Research conducted in 2007 into the duration of painful symptoms suffered by people making whiplash compensation claims suggested that going for treatment for these symptoms actually prolonged the pain.
This seems to run against common sense. Why should it be that medical attention would worsen the pain associated with a neck injury? Yet the results do suggest this. The authors state that "increasing the intensity of care to more than 2 visits to a general practitioner, 6 visits to a chiropractor, or adding chiropractic care to general practitioner care was associated with slower recovery."
However, this concurs with previous research from Toronto University. If this is true, then it makes the simple decision to visit your GP once the best option. However, this can only be generally true, and each hyperflexion case is going to be different. Medical advice should be sought before taking any decisions that may affect your health.
Indeed, the researchers also state that their research into the neck injury should not be taken as the final word. They draw attention to the need for further trials, as these "are essential to understand the influence of health care provision in preventing or facilitating disability."
What was clear within the research was that there seems to be little difference between those whiplash sufferers who make a compensation claim with a firm of personal injury solicitors and those who do not; the effect was based on the number of times a medical practitioner was visited.
