The whiplash patient's first visit to an osteopath

After an accident that has caused whiplash or whiplash-associated disorders (WADs) it may be necessary to visit an osteopath for treatment. According to Andrew C Woodhouse, BSc (Hons) Ost, who is an osteopath, NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques) practitioner and western acupuncturist, treatment by an osteopath should be a pleasant and relaxing experience.

He suggests that an initial consultation with an osteopath, for a patient with whiplash symptoms, will include the following:

Case History
A full case history of the complaint and the patient's medical history will be taken, including how and when the whiplash injury occurred, when the symptoms of pain started, recent and historical injuries, operations and details of general health.

The osteopath should also assess the appropriateness of certain techniques relevant to the health of the patient and will decide whether further tests or referrals are required elsewhere.

Examination and Assessment
Both active and passive movement will be assessed. Active movement is when the patient moves around under their own function, and passive movement is when the osteopath moves the patient's limbs, neck, etc.

Further tests may include:

  • Checking reflexes, muscle strength, etc; and

  • Taking readings of blood pressure, arterial pulses, and/or an examination of the patient's retina if vascular disease is suspected.

Whiplash treatment
Normally, some level of treatment will be carried out in the first visit to an osteopath unless the practitioner has identified a condition that requires further medical investigation.

The osteopath should be able to adapt a wide range of therapies for each individual case, but much of the treatment will be through a technique known as pTests that need to be carried out elsewhere such as X-rays, blood tests, etc., will need referral to your GP.alpation, whereby the practitioner uses their hands to diagnose a problem and then treat the area with touch.

The amount of treatment given will inevitably vary between patients, but Mr Woodhouse suggests that less is more in osteopathy and that it is possible to "over treat" patients, especially in the initial consultation, as the body needs time to adjust to changes .
