NSAIDs as a painkiller in a whiplash injury claim

NSAIDs may be prescribed by a doctor during a whiplash injury claim. They are a form of painkiller that will treat both pain and inflammation, with a name that stands for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Ibuprofen is the best-known NSAID, and is available over the counter from a chemist to treat any kind of pain, not just the neck injury resulting from hyperflexion. For sufferers whose pain is long-term, however, or more severe, a more potent NSAID may be prescribed.

Research has suggested that people who take stronger NSAIDs over a long period - over a year - may run the risk of heart trouble or a stroke as a result of the drug. Most hyperflexion injuries should settle before the year is over, but in the case of chronic whiplash, it may be worth discussing this risk with a doctor.

Some newer NSAIDs are COX-2 inhibitors, a development in the drugs industry that is intended to ease effects on a sufferer's stomach, but research suggests that there may be side effects to these. Other NSAIDs that may be prescribed for a neck injury include diclofenac, etodolac, ketoprofen, meloxicam and naproxen, each of which may be sold under a brand name.

When prescribing NSAIDs, doctors are advised to encourage whiplash sufferers (and, indeed, all patients) to stick to the lowest possible dose, to encourage them to take NSAIDs only for as long as is necessary, and to avoid prescribing them to patients with pre-existing heart trouble.
