Analysis of the pain suffered in neck injury caused by whiplash

It is an interesting fact that people experience pain in different ways - and medics are not able to explain the reasons why this happens.

Neck injuries caused by whiplash frequently occur in shunts and crashes to the rear of vehicles at a speed of less than 14 mph. About two thirds of people recover from whiplash after a few months of pain and discomfort. A condition called late whiplash syndrome can occur in some cases while about 2% of patients maybe permanently impaired or disabled.

Such injuries can be graded into four categories. The most serious - category four - is where all symptoms described below are present plus dislocation or fracture has occurred.

Categories of whiplash and compensation claims

Mild whiplash injury is classed as category one - neck stiffness, tenderness and pain are present but movement is not restricted and there are no signs of neurological or ligament injuries.

Category two whiplash is where symptoms are described by doctors as 'slight'. Here, tenderness can be found as well as limited movement, indicating muscular and skeletal problems.

Moderate whiplash is classed as a category three injury. In this instance, there is much stiffness, tenderness, instability and / or injury of the ligaments. Neurological symptoms may also be present such as numbness, weakness, upper limb pain and pain radiating from the neck.

But how to measure whiplash pain?

Doctors are guided by patients who assess their pain using a scale from one to 10 - and the honesty of patients about the amount of pain being suffered has to be accepted.

West Indian doctor Garth Rattray points out, "Pain cannot be measured in the blood, by X-rays or scans; physicians must depend on the patient's history and description of the pain to guide them."

In order to treat pain, doctors have to be guided by, for instance, the facial expressions of patients, their general movement and perhaps check the signs about the presence of pain.
