When whiplash is the good news!

If you have been involved in an incident and you have suffered severe jolting of the head and neck, it is likely that an ambulance crew may put your neck in a cervical neck collar, particularly if you have lost consciousness at the scene of the accident or any other head trauma is apparent.

When the patient is taken to an Accident and Emergency department at a hospital, the neck collar will only be removed by a doctor when they are certain there is no serious underlying condition present.

In most cases, the collar will be removed if there is no need for X-rays, for example if the patient has a normal level of consciousness and alertness, there is no apparent muscle weakness or sensation difficulties (feeling in the limbs), there are no other painful injuries elsewhere on the body including tenderness in the back of the neck, and there is no evidence of alcohol or drug misuse.

The doctors will leave a collar in place if they feel X-rays are required. This will be determined after an examination of spinal cord function.

If the doctor feels the examination has revealed neck injury of greater severity than whiplash or soft tissue cervical hyperextension then x-rays will be taken to ascertain the level of damage sustained. After X-ray, further tests may be ordered such as a CT scan (computerised [Axial] tomography) or MRI scan (magnetic resonance imaging) to aid further diagnosis of the injury.

If the X-rays show no cervical spine damage or any condition that requires further investigation then the collar will be removed.
