One rare symptom that may be suffered by a person claiming whiplash compensation is Lhermitte's Sign.
This is when a sufferer finds that a feeling reminiscent of an electrical shock travels down a nerve when the neck is flexed, affecting the spine, limbs or both. It is often considered to be a sign of damage having befallen the nerves, as the signal that feels like a shock is the nerve 'misfiring'.
The condition is also described as the 'Barber Chair phenomenon', and is named after Jean Lhermitte, who did not, in fact, write the first paper on the subject, just the first famous one.
Whiplash sufferers who find they are experiencing Lhermitte's sign should alert their doctors, as it may also be a symptom of various other conditions, including multiple sclerosis; if that degenerative disease is diagnosed in time, its progress may be slowed with modern medicine.
If it is shown to be a symptom of a whiplash injury, however, its effect on a sufferer's compensation claim depends very much on how it affects that sufferer. If, for example, recurrent shocks made it impossible to continue in one's line of work, the amount that could be claimed for lost earnings would be directly affected.
Rare symptoms in whiplash compensation cases
The rarity of some symptoms means that there may well be less information available to those suffering this neck injury - and, of course, less history in case law relating to those symptoms simply by virtue of their rarity. However, a strong personal injury solicitor will still be able to establish how a rare symptom (or symptoms) may feature in a no win, no fee compensation claim, and advise a sufferer on the best way of proceeding.
Here at YouClaim, we insist on working only with the best; in whiplash cases, therefore, we only appoint personal injury solicitors from firms that are governed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, specialise in the right area of personal injury law, and can handle a case on a free-to-client basis.
So, if you have suffered a hyperflexion injury to your neck, whether through a car crash, sports accident, or other mishap, and you believe you are suffering through someone else's fault, our team could help you claim the appropriate damages at no cost to yourself. You can also rely on receiving the full 100 percent compensation in a won case - we never take a cut.
