Whiplash and other horse riding accident injuries

There are many personal injures that could be sustained while taking in the country air on horseback but, along with compensation claims for serious back injuries, whiplash injury claims are among those most commonly made following horse riding accidents.

Horse racing has been deemed the Sport of Kings but regular horse riding is enjoyed by both country folk and city dwellers of all ages. There are more than three million riding enthusiasts in Britain today. However, sadly over eight horse related road accidents occur every day and approximately five horse riders are killed as a result each year.

Common personal injuries
Here are some examples of the kind of horse riding accidents and resulting personal injuries that have occurred over the last few years:

Prince Harry was thrown to the ground after his pony got agitated during a polo match in June 2003. The Prince did not sustain any serious personal injuries and was able to continue with the game.

One woman from West Sussex was thrown from a bucking horse during August 2006. It was thought that the horse had learnt a new trick and was showing off when she threw her owner to the ground. The rider landed heavily on the field below and her horse's hoof pounded down on her leg. The rider also jarred her neck as she fell which lead her to sustain a minor whiplash injury. She was laid up for around two weeks and was unable to regain her nerve to ride again for many weeks.

27-year-old David Heron was shocked when the horse he was riding landed on him just before taking part in its round at the Burgie International Horse Trials in June 2003. The horse was thought to have suffered a heart attack but the rider sustained no serious personal injuries.

A girl from Hampshire hit her head on a branch while trekking during May 2004. She was left suffering severe whiplash symptoms and in need of wearing a soft collar for a number of weeks.

In order to avoid being involved in a road accident which could cause a whiplash injury it is vital that both horse riders and motorists are aware of one another and stay safe. Riders should also wear riding helmets that meet with British Safety Standards whenever on horseback in order to protect themselves from sustaining a serious head injury.
