Extensor muscle fat research and whiplash claims

One of the problems that people making a whiplash claim may face is the difficulty of making the diagnosis, which means any test that can be produced that makes this task easier is likely to be welcomed by compensation claimants and their personal injury solicitors.

A group of scientists who published results in 2008 have suggested that one method of testing for whiplash may involve the detection of fatty deposits in the extensor muscles of those suffering from the neck injury.

The group's 2006 study into similar conditions suggested that these deposits were present in those who had suffered whiplash injury and not in those who had healthy neck muscles, but the possibility remained that the deposits were the result of generalised lack of use, rather than the result of hyperflexion specifically. The later research therefore set out to see if the deposits could lead to differentiation between whiplash and non-whiplash injury.

Their research, studying one group of people with chronic neck pain and one with previously diagnosed whiplash, found that there were clear differences in the amount of extensor muscle fat levels between the groups, and that cold and heat tolerance was also reduced in the whiplash group. The lead researcher has described this as a potential hallmark of the condition.

However, this remains at the research stage. As the scientist says, "We still need to determine the temporal development of fat, and whether the presence and magnitude of fatty infiltrate will influence clinical decision-making."

Personal injury solicitors for your whiplash claim
Having been given a diagnosis of whiplash is one thing, but if that condition causes you to be out of pocket as a result - whether through the costs of treatment, lost income or whatever - you may be eligible to claim that back as damages in a compensation claim. To do so, you will need the services of a first-class personal injury solicitor.

Here at YouClaim, we have a panel of no win, no fee professionals that can fill that need. All are drawn from UK firms that are governed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, all offer our 100 percent compensation guarantee, and all will handle whiplash compensation cases on an entirely free basis, win or lose.
