Fake claims for whiplash injury and other fraudulent compensation bids

A rise in fraudulent car crash claims for matters such as whiplash injury is being highlighted by insurance firms as the recession continues to bite.

Fraudsters embark on various scams such as faking injuries and submitting car accident repair bills that are artificially inflated.

Organised criminal gangs are known to target insurance claim fraud as a lucrative method to obtain many thousands of pounds by deception.

Insurance firms have a vested interest in not paying out whiplash and other injury compensation claims. Such claims hit their bottom line, so it makes sense for them to court publicity about their efforts to prevent alleged fraud.

FTSE 100 insurance firm, Admiral, reported in 2009 that suspicious or fictitious claims are up by a third and a specialist detection team is continually investigating possible irregularities. And UK insurer Aviva stated fraudulent claims are up by a tenth in the same year.

Fake whiplash claims for minor accidents, as well as providing false details about passengers in cars are among examples of fraudulent claims.

Admiral said it estimated that fraud accounted for about four to five per cent of total insurance premiums written. Fraudulent insurance claims are calculated to add £44 a year to insurance policies.
