Vision can be affected by a whiplash injury

The effects of whiplash can spread further than simply the neck. It is possible, for example, for someone who has been involved in a car accident, or another source of a whiplash injury, to find that their vision is affected.

The increased muscle tension that can be caused by the soft tissue damage in a whiplash injury can itself transfer to muscles beyond the neck, and this can impair control of the muscles in the visual system. Studies have shown that sufferers can have slower reactions to visual signals, such as road signs or driving hazards, meaning they are more liable to have another accident than they were before the one that caused the neck injury.

There may also have been nervous damage; indeed, it is possible that the motion involved in a whiplash injury can also damage the brain as it is thrown against the skull. This can, of course, affect anything, including vision, as the brain is so central to the whole body's operation.

However, this is not to say that eye damage should be treated as proof of a brain injury in a whiplash situation. The UK journal, Optometry Today, references a study that shows "whiplash or cervical strain can cause visual dysfunctions without a documented TBI [traumatic brain injury]." Only a medical professional will be able to make a definitive diagnosis.

Other eye injuries, such as a detached retina, may occur with whiplash, but may well be a result of the same accident that caused the whiplash injury rather than being directly related.
