Some theories have suggested that cervical vertigo occurs as a result of vascular compression while others have said that it is due to alteration of sensory input to the vestibular system.

In contrast to other research, Vibert et al (2003) have suggested that dizziness related to whiplash may more likely be a result of vestibular injury instead of neck or brain trauma. The vestibular system or balance system is the sensory system that provides the major input about our movement and orientation. Along with the cochlea, it is located in the vestibulum in the inner ear.
