Dizziness caused by whiplash injuries
There are a number of whiplash symptoms that you may suffer after your neck has been stretched and strained in a car accident. Read more about whiplash symptoms. However, dizziness is one of the most common characteristics of a whiplash injury.
It is thought that dizziness occurs in 20-60% of whiplash cases and can persist for a number of years. However, according to Radanov et al 1994, 75% of patients recover by 1 year, while ongoing problems are more likely in people who have been involved in serious collisions.
Many studies have been carried out into the cause of dizziness with neck injuries and one of the most likely causes is thought to be joint error position (the inability to return to the natural head posture after extension and rotation). According to Treleaven, Jull and Sterling 2003, subjects suffering from Whiplash-Associated-Disorders have much greater joint position errors when compared to control subjects and cervical mechanoreceptor dysfunction was documented as a likely cause of dizziness.
As already discussed, dizziness is often experienced after a neck injury but there is some controversy regarding the frequency with which cervical vertigo occurs. Some theories have suggested that cervical vertigo occurs as a result of vascular compression while others have said that it is due to alteration of sensory input to the vestibular system.
In contrast to other research, Vibert et al (2003) have suggested that dizziness related to whiplash may more likely be a result of vestibular injury instead of neck or brain trauma. The vestibular system or balance system is the sensory system that provides the major input about our movement and orientation. Along with the cochlea, it is located in the vestibulum in the inner ear.
Whatever the cause of dizziness associated with whiplash, it can be very inconvenient and stop sufferers from doing all sorts of everyday activities, from driving to doing the housework.
