One of the sites of personal injury that can result in a person being able to claim whiplash compensation is the anterior longitudinal ligament.
This is a piece of connective tissue that extends the full length of the front of the spine. While it remains true that the mechanics of whiplash-associated disorders are not entirely understood, this ligament remains one of the prime suspects as a cause of pain in people who have suffered a whiplash neck injury and the associated discomfort and reduced ability.
Research has shown that injury in the form of strain on the anterior longitudinal ligament can be observed in the cervical spine area from accelerative forces of 3.5 times the force of gravity, which is not rare in a car accident. Stronger forces were observed to lead to injury extending over a wider range of intervertebral levels, which means that pain is felt over a greater area of the spine.
In a separate study, it was shown that the extension of the anterior longitudinal ligament under the forces that are likely to be experienced in the kind of accident that would lead to a whiplash injury was enough to approach the failure levels for human ligaments.
In both studies, preventative measures could be summed up as preventing the head from moving too far during an accident. This should reduce the hyperflexion involved in the classic back-and-forth snap movement that a collision results in, and therefore should reduce the likelihood of receiving a whiplash injury.
While several car manufacturers are deploying mechanisms to minimise the distance the driver's head travels in a crash, the fact that these are neither universal nor present in older cars means that hyperflexion injuries to the anterior longitudinal ligament may well continue to be an element in whiplash claims.
