Symptoms of acute and chronic whiplash injuries

Although some people will simply categorize whiplash as neck pain, there are two different types of whiplash neck injury and those are acute and chronic.

Acute whiplash

This type of neck pain is short-lived, but can nevertheless cause the personal injury victim discomfort, stress and loss of earnings while they recover.

The symptoms of whiplash may not be immediately apparent, with some individuals only beginning to suffer from pain, bruising and swelling in their neck six to twelve hours after the accident.

Individuals might complain that they are experiencing headaches, a stiff neck, lower back pain, dizziness, and fatigue, and have difficulty swallowing. Furthermore, symptoms may include blurred vision, pins-and-needles in their arms and hands (paraesthesia), tinnitus, and memory loss.

The dizziness, headaches, blurred vision and problems swallowing should only last a short amount of time. People who are worried by the length of time they have been suffering from these symptoms should visit their GP.

Chronic whiplash

Acute whiplash turns into chronic whiplash if the patient is still suffering pain and other symptoms more than six months after the incident occurred.

The symptoms mentioned above may also be suffered by individuals who have been diagnosed with chronic whiplash. However, chronic whiplash can be accompanied by psychological and emotional symptoms.

After experiencing neck pain and other problems linked with whiplash for more than half a year, individuals are understandably more prone to feelings of anxiety and depression.
