Accidents on holiday and the dangers of white water rafting

While on holiday abroad, many families who wish to keep their children entertained will turn to adventure activities such as white water rafting. This can be an exciting way to spend your holidays but caution should be maintained when picking a tour to help reduce your chances of having an accident on holiday.

White water rafting can be a particularly dangerous activity and is only suitable for strong swimmers. Faster rivers with big rapids are not suitable for young children and many tour operators would refuse to take those under a certain age due to the dangers involved.

In 2010, a nine-year-old Welsh schoolgirl died while on a white water rafting holiday in southern Turkey. The girl was rafting with her family when she was thrown from the inflatable after it hit rocks on the Dalaman River in Koygeyiz.

A young boy was also injured in the same incident and had to be treated in hospital for his injuries.

Other tour operators who offer white water rafting experiences on the river do not allow anyone under 18 the chance to go on the water.

One tour operator spokesperson explained, "We don't sell rafting to children it's far too demanding and dangerous for them.

"You have to be a strong swimmer and in good physical condition to go rafting."

The Turkish authorities investigated the incident to ascertain whether the accident on holiday was preventable. If found to be the cause of operator negligence the family would be able to make a compensation claim.

A holiday accident can ruin what should be a fun and special time away with your friends or family. If one of your party is injured due to the negligence of a tour operator, you deserve to claim compensation for any expenses suffered because of the injury.
