One of the effects of a recession, as was noted in 2008-9, is that people may choose to take their vacations in their own country rather than travelling abroad. Sadly, taking domestic holidays does not mean the end of holiday accidents.
Among the UK's tourist attractions for those on a "staycation" or domestic break are farms that invite visitors. As these are often working farms at the same time as being a tourist attraction, the risks that may befall a farm worker do overlap with those that may threaten a visitor. It is important, therefore, that the owner of the farm should undertake a risk assessment of those dangers that may result in holiday injury.
This may relate to farm machinery - threshers and mowers, for example, are heavy machines with sharp blades that can cause injury to guests who get too close. Even vehicles such as tractors can pinch fingers in their moving parts, or crush a visitor if they roll unpredictably. All safety measures should be taken, therefore, to prevent such occurrences, and warnings should be given to visitors to take appropriate care around them.
Animals, too, may bite, trample or use their horns to spike visitors. Farmers may know how docile certain animals are, and be aware of the dangers of others, but as living creatures there is the possibility of unpredictable behaviours. Again, preventative measures should be taken to minimise these risks.
There is also the possibility of exposure to infection or toxic chemicals. Lambing ewes, and newborn lambs, may carry toxoplasmosis, for example, which can be dangerous to pregnant visitors.
Fortunately, most farms are aware of the risks, and do all in their power to avoid holiday injury and attendant personal injury compensation claims.
