One of the many cases our team of mesothelioma specialists have handled was that of a dock worker who, back in the late 1970s, had been responsible for stripping out old ships that were due to be scrapped. Whilst carrying out this work he was frequently exposed to asbestos dust but, unaware of the dangers of the substance, had not worn any protective clothing.
Twenty five years later and the father of three teenage children, Mr Harrison began to suffer breathing difficulties and was diagnosed with mesothelioma. The doctors blamed this deadly condition on his contact with asbestos and gave him less than six months to live. He tragically died four months later, leaving behind a heartbroken family.
Unable to support the three children on her own, Mr Harrison's devastated widow contacted YouClaim and explained that she wanted to pursue a compensation claim against the company for whom he had worked in the 70s. We agreed to take on the case and promised her that it wouldn't cost her a penny.
It was soon discovered that Mr Harrison's former employers had already been the subject of several industrial illness claims and had paid out significant compensation to others whose relatives had died from asbestos-related diseases.
Not wanting to be the subject of negative media attention, the company quickly agreed a settlement with Mr Harrison's widow and she received just under £200,000.
