Three villages in Cappadocia, Turkey, became important to mesothelioma researchers in 1970s when a piece of research was published indicating that the lung cancer was massively prevalent in the area. It turned out that erionite, an asbestos-like material in the local geology, had coincided with a genetic predisposition in the local people.
It has since been shown that the genetic predisposition of the Turkish villagers was such that very small amounts of either erionite or asbestos could trigger the cancer, with a greater likelihood than in the general public.
With genetic predisposition proven to be a factor in the development of the industrial disease, it was possible to explain why one person exposed to toxic asbestos fibres may go on to develop malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and a fellow-worker may not.
More recent research has indicated that microbial infections and genetic factors other than that of the Turkish villagers may also be implicated in the development of the condition, but it may well be argued that the citizens of Tuzköy, Karain, and Sarihidir have been important contributors to the train of thought from which the recent research has been developed.
To indicate the high prevalence of the condition in those villages, standardized figures show that MPM affects between 200 and 700 cases per 100,000 people per year, compared to a rate of 10 cases per 100,000 in non-exposed people - or between 20 and 70 times more people per year in the Cappadocian villages.
