Working farms and work-related accidents
18/04/2011

All working farms, city farms, rescue centres, agricultural shows and animal petting enclaves have a duty to protect both workers and visitors from the risk of suffering injury or illness in work-related accidents.

This obligation is particularly pertinent given the risks which exist where members of the public are coming into close contact or proximity with livestock.

For example, live bacteria such as E coli O157, a foodborne illness most commonly found in the intestinal contents of cattle, presents a very serious risk and can cause a range of symptoms, from haemorrhagic diarrhoea to kidney failure and, in some extreme cases, death.

However, by implementing thorough risk assessments and ensuring a number of safety steps, the risk of an E coli O157 work-related accident can be kept at the lowest level possible.

Examples of the steps which can be taken to prevent contamination include good levels of general cleanliness, separate eating areas, ensuring walkways and paths are free of animal faeces, specialised animal contact areas, and active encouragement of good hand hygiene.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) publishes a leaflet providing guidance on these matters, Preventing or controlling ill health from animal contact at visitor attractions.

A specialist safety spokesperson with the National Farmers Union (NFU) says that the union and "its members take the potential for ill health extremely seriously, and this document provides welcome further guidance on the best way to manage contact with animals to ensure that the millions of people who visit farms every year remember their day for all the right reasons."
