Mesothelioma and the threat of new materials

For many years mesothelioma has been solely associated with ingestion of asbestos fibres, but as technology advances, possible potential health threats are being identified in certain sectors of scientific advancement.

In March 2009 the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) requested that governmental safety regulations be implemented with regard to nanotechnology and nanomaterials in view of potential health links akin to the dangers of asbestos.

Nanotechnology is the control of matter on an atomic or molecular scale and typically involves the development of materials and devices with a size of 100 nanometres or smaller.

Concerns have been raised that nanoparticles share similar characteristics to asbestos fibres, which have proven causative effect in pleural mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. It is estimated that over 800 products available to consumers globally contain nanoparticles to some degree.

At the Australian Science meets Parliament event 2009, Occupational Health and Safety Officer Steve Mullins stated that nanotechnology regulations were urgently required.

He said, "What is happening is a market is growing in an unregulated space and that is dangerous for workers. From our point of view, there are growing concerns about the health and safety impacts of nanotechnology."

In February 2009, the United States House of Representatives approved the National Nanotechnology Initiative Amendments Act, devised to aid the development of nanotechnology as well as to provide research into potential health risks, including a plan for environmental and safety research.

Studies have reportedly shown that nanoparticles of a particular long, thin shape are the type that have potential to cause harm and there have been widespread calls for the risks to be investigated so as to avoid the terrible toll on health that the widespread and early unchecked use of asbestos has wrought.
