How injury claims contribute to the cost of motor insurance
The worlds of motor insurance and car accident injury claims are closely linked, perhaps best reflected in the fact that 10% of all money spent on car insurance policies is ultimately used to pay solicitors' legal costs.
Another example of this link is found in the way that the increasing cost of road accident injury claims has indirectly led to rises in the cost of motor insurance. During 2007 the cost of the average motor insurance policy rocketed from £594 to £629, a rise of 5.9% and more than double the general inflation rate for the year of 2.1%.
Perhaps the most significant factors contributing to this scenario are the number of young and uninsured drivers on the UK's roads, as these two groups have a ten times greater chance of being involved in a car crash than the wider population.
One other major factor is the rise in medical costs associated with these kinds of compensation claim. Paradoxically, improvements in road safety technology have actually led to a rise in the costs for treating injuries.
This is because safety advances have lessened the severity of injuries that only a few years ago would have proved fatal. While this is good news for the individuals concerned, increases in the cost of medical care hit both insurers and policyholders, in some cases leading to situations where certain consumers cannot afford insurance and even instances of insurers refusing to consider insuring any drivers under the age of 21.
The situation has become so pronounced that many insurance companies predict yearly rises for premiums of around 15% to be on the menu for the next decade or so. News of these predictions is typically met with scepticism by many insurance experts who accuse the insurance industry of seeking a scapegoat for their profit-focused price increases.
However, Association of British Insurers spokesperson Malcom Tarling believes that a different system of compensating people for their road accident injuries should be achieved. He comments, "The average personal injury claim takes far too long to settle. We want to speed up payment of these claims to under six months.
"Too often lawyers are involved when there is no need. We are pushing the Government to introduce a more streamlined procedure for dealing with the smaller, simpler personal injury claims of under £25,000. We want a radical shake up."
