Concerns that any lapse in the effort to properly manage the existing asbestos in UK schools could lead to future mesothelioma epidemics has now become an issue of national interest after it was revealed that nearly all of the schools in Kent and Sussex still contain the substance.
This revelation comes after an investigation by a BBC documentary team found that 185 of 195 East Sussex schools contained the substance, while 554 of 599 Kent schools contained some level of the deadly industrial substance.
THANET South MP Steve Ladyman has called for urgent action on the issue, commenting, "I am very surprised by the figure and if this is true an urgent assessment needs to be carried out.
"Asbestos is not dangerous if it is contained so the kids are not at risk but it is still something that needs to be investigated and I will be looking into it. Now is a good time to know about this as we are carrying out our Building Schools for the Future scheme."
In addition, teachers and parents have voiced fears that any exposure to the asbestos threat could lead to current pupils and teachers developing cases of mesothelioma in the future.
John Walder, a secretary of the National Union of Teachers, comments, "The NUT's view is quite clear. We think that the solution is the complete removal of asbestos from all the working spaces.
"As long as local authorities do not remove asbestos from a site, there will be a risk of fibres getting into the atmosphere and getting into people's lungs."
A spokesperson from East Sussex County Council has said that the council continues to address the issue of asbestos in its schools.
