Stay safe on holiday when using a jet ski

Holiday-makers often try out activities when they are away which they wouldn't attempt if they were at home. However, new pursuits on holiday aren't always treated with as much caution as they would be at home, and many people sadly are forced to make a holiday accident claim.

Riding a jet ski is an incredibly popular activity on holiday, but these powered water-borne vehciles can also be very dangerous. However, precautions can be taken to help prevent a jet ski accident or tragedy.

Under no circumstances should a jet ski be operated by someone under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If the rider is not in complete control of the jet ski, they are much more likely to be involved in an accident.

Jet ski drivers should always keep an eye out for people who may be swimming in the water around the vessel. If there are, the engine should be turned off to prevent them from sustaining a personal injury.

Distractions to the driver should be minimal, just as they would be in any other vehicle such as a car or a motorbike.

All persons riding on a jet ski should wear an approved life jacket to protect them in case they fall into the water. Footwear with a good grip, such as deck shoes or trainers, should make the vehicle easier to control.

Drivers should be careful not to drop litter or spill pollutants, such as fuel, into the water to help minimise the effect that the jet ski has on the environment.

Other vessels in the water should be observed carefully to avoid any crossing of paths – collisions are the most common type of jet skiing accident.

Jet skis can reach speeds of up to 65 miles per hour and are classified as a type of motorboat. Although drivers may feel powerful on a jet ski, they must not forget that they share the space with other boats, swimmers, surfers and fishermen who should all be treated with respect.
