Carpal tunnel syndrome, the causes and the compensation

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), which is a condition that affects the tunnel through which tendons and the median nerve pass through the wrist to the hand, can lead to the victim suffering numbness and weakness in their hand, and nerve damage if left untreated.

This condition, which affects a greater number of women than men annually in Britain, is usually suffered by people from the ages of 50 to 54 or75 to 84.

What can cause CTS?

Although carpal tunnel syndrome does affect some 50% of pregnant women during their pregnancy and occasionally up until a year after the birth of their child, it can also be caused by arthritis, fluid retention (oedema), diabetes, and repeated movement of the wrist.

Making a claim for CTS

It is unlikely that a victim of carpal tunnel syndrome will be able to make a compensation claim for the condition if it is being caused by arthritis, fluid retention, or diabetes. However, if the individual is suffering CTS due to excessive movement of or pressure on the wrist, coupled with a lack of suitable rest periods at work, they could make a claim against their employer.

What happens physically to cause the symptoms?

Failing to rest the wrist can lead to an increase in the pressure in the carpal tunnel due to inflammation.

As the tunnel becomes more restricted, the median nerve will be compressed and this can cause the symptoms, including numbness, mentioned above.

Treatment for sufferers

If the severity of the symptoms has not progressed too far, then non-surgical treatments often work very well for sufferers.

Mild to moderate symptoms will usually fade with the aid of a wrist splint to keep the joint still, and corticosteroid injections to relieve the inflammation.

However, surgery may be necessary to relieve the pressure on the median nerve if the patient is suffering from severe symptoms of CTS.
