Although laser eye surgery may seem like the perfect solution for bad eyesight, the risks that come with the procedure aren't always considered as carefully as they should be. Patients sometimes fall victim to complications in the surgery and may require a medical negligence solicitor.
An undercover study carried out by Which? in 2009 revealed that three, highly advertised, laser eye clinics were prone to playing down procedural risks to prospective patients. Instead, patients were encouraged have the surgery with little awareness of the medical risks and complications.
Risks of the procedure can cause various types of long-term problems, including poor night vision, dry eye problems and, in some cases, loss of vision.
Dry eyes can be given some relief with eye drops, however, long-term use of these can increase the risk of chronic eye inflammation.
The research also revealed that patients were not informed that they were likely to need glasses again later on in their lives.
"Floaters" are another complication that can occur, this phenomenon appears as black lines and dots in the patient's vision after the procedure.
The condition can be a result of a flap being carved into the surface of the cornea which is then lifted so the laser can remove part of the corneal tissue underneath.
However, if the flap is not put back exactly as it was and contains any ridges or wrinkles, it produce speckles in the patient's vision.
If a person is considering having laser surgery, it is a recommended for them to choose a surgeon who has had at least three months formal training in the procedure.
Laser eye surgery can produce highly successful results, however, patients should seriously consider the potential medical risks and complications before choosing to proceed with the life-altering surgery.
