Harmful substances can cause skin conditions to develop

There are a number of occupations where workers are required to use substances which are hazardous and known to cause harm when they come into contact with skin.

To prevent a worker from developing a skin condition, such as dermatitis, employers or members of management must ensure that everyone is provided with the right training and protection.

People at risk

People in all sorts of different work roles may be at risk of developing a skin condition, and workers who need to be aware include hairdressers, dentists, construction workers, caterers and mechanics.

Although a lot of products containing dangerous substances are labelled and workers can therefore use or avoid them accordingly, others will simply be created as a by-product of the work being undertaken and may not be such an obvious risk. For example, wood dust created from sanding, and solder fumes, can be dangerous to workers if they are not protected.

Even substances such as foods or flowers, can cause skin irritation if they are handled a lot, so it is vital that workers are well informed and provided with appropriate protection.

Preventing skin conditions from developing

Many skin conditions could have been avoided entirely if the correct steps had been taken to protect a worker's skin.

The most effective way of avoiding harm happening to the skin is by avoiding contact with harmful substances and regularly checking for any symptoms which indicate that skin has become irritated.

Conditions which are spotted earlier on can be treated quickly and hopefully any further irritation can be prevented. If a person is concerned about their skin, they can seek advice from a medical practitioner who may be able to provide medication to ease any irritation.

By following these simple steps, workers reduce the risk of sustaining a work injury and are less likely to need to make a damages claim later on.
