As human beings everyone is prone to making mistakes, but when it comes to making mistakes as a medical professional these moments of error can result in life-changing injuries for the patients being treated.
In 2008, one man from Birmingham underwent a biopsy to have a tumour in his pituitary gland removed.
Due to a failure to review blood test results, which showed that his tumour was benign and could have been controlled by medication, the man underwent unnecessary surgery – medication negligence which was compounded when the surgeon removed a healthy piece of brain tissue instead of the tumour.
As a result of this the 63-year-old man suffered a haemorrhage, sustained permanent brain injury, and was left partially sighted and in need of constant care.
The man's wife stated in an article in 2011on The Guardian website, "[My husband's] brain injury has had devastating effects on him. Prior to the surgery, he was a very easygoing person who was always active and on the go. To see the change in him and to know that it was all entirely avoidable is extremely upsetting.
"As a paramedic, based at the Small Heath ambulance station with more than 23 years experience of working with the NHS, [he] put his complete trust in his surgeon, believing that he was an expert who knew best.
"It is appalling to think that the surgeon managed to botch the procedure completely. Then to find that the biopsy wasn't even necessary makes me incredibly angry. This mistake is not something that the hospital can just take back."
The man's family called on the General Medical Council (GMC) to investigate the case and the NHS trust admitted liability for the injuries caused.
The amount of surgical error compensation that the family was to receive was being discussed in August 2011 and it is likely that a large settlement was reached to help with the victim's life-long care.
If you or a family member has sustained personal injuries due to surgical error, compensation could be gained from making a claim against the individual or organisation liable for the incident.
