Left-right confusion is very common. Although it might seem like the simplest and most natural distinction to make, for many people, particularly those with certain conditions such as dyslexia or Gerstmann's Syndrome, it is fact of life.
However, left-right disorientation is not something that one expects from a surgeon, yet time and again there are reported examples of surgeons making serious, sometimes fatal, left-right errors – a situation which is likely to lead to the relevant hospital or hospital trust being liable for payments of surgical error compensation.
In almost all such cases, the mistakes leading to this are down to pure carelessness and are inexcusable.
For example, in Britain alone, in recent years, there have been numerous examples of male patients being left infertile as a result of having the wrong testicle removed: a simple left-right mistake.
Furthermore, both here and abroad there have been incidents of patients having the wrong lung removed, usually through sheer carelessness causing left-right disorientation. In most circumstances this error has led, usually abruptly, but sometimes over a longer period of time, to the affected patient's death.
Left-right disorientation may also lead to a surgeon removing the wrong kidney in cases of patients who have been admitted for surgery to a diseased kidney. This is something which happened at a hospital in South Wales in 2000. It left the 70-year-old patient with only a barely-functioning and heavily diseased kidney. Tragically but unsurprisingly, the patient shortly afterwards developed blood poisoning and died.
Other cases of left-right confusion have resulted in women with breast cancer having the wrong breast removed and have even resulted in the mistaken removal of healthy limbs in the place of diseased and cancerous ones.
