Unborn baby's death led to medical negligence pay-out

The vast majority of babies in the UK are born fit and well but, unfortunately, each year, a small proportion and their parents suffer in some way which can lead to a claim for medical negligence against some of the health professionals or organisations involved.

When a baby does not reach full-term and is stillborn this is often as a result of nature taking its course and nothing can be done to save the foetus. However, with modern treatment, many tiny babies born weeks early can survive and become healthy children.

A mother in Essex whose baby was stillborn after a hospital failed to act on tests which showed unusual levels of glucose in her blood was awarded five-figure damages for the lack of care and personal injury to herself and unborn daughter.

Another result of the case was that new glucose tolerance tests for pregnant women were introduced at the hospital and it is now ranked as one of the best in the country.

With continuing advances in medical research, pregnancy and birth in a UK hospital or maternity unit should be a matter of professional care leading to joy for a family but if heartache is the result you do not need to suffer in silence but should consult a specialist lawyer about pursuing a claim and consequently improving health services.
