Research is continually being undertaken into the diseases that lead to asbestos compensation, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. Some investigates potential medical solutions to the industrial diseases, while other papers attempt to understand the statistics that help people to understand the distribution, cause and effect of the conditions.
Statistical research is notoriously difficult, particularly where there are many variables to measure. This can be shown by comparing two papers, published only two years apart, that look at the likelihood of a carpenter suffering mesothelioma, and come to apparently different answers.
The 2009 study found that 1 in 17 carpenters born in the 40s who worked with asbestos were likely to suffer from mesothelioma. The earlier study, from 2007, found that the likelihood of the same group suffering from the same condition is 1 in 10. This difference is even more striking when it is considered that Professor Peto, of Cancer Research UK, is responsible for both figures.
The difference is notable; for a group of 1000 carpenters exposed to the fibres, the first figure would predict 100 diagnoses of the asbestos lung cancer, whereas the second would expect approximately 60.
There are various elements that could explain this difference in asbestos cancer predictions, including types of average taken, intervals of confidence, and the amount of data gathered. It is also possible, of course, for media reports of difficult mathematical work to be misreported.
