While for some people, high heels might be seen as a chic and essential platform for the working woman, others view them as socially regressive, demeaning, inappropriate and likely to cause work injury.
This debate came to the fore in 2009 when the Trade Union Congress proposed a motion calling for it to be outlawed for employers to require women workers to wear high heels.
The motion reads, "Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely inappropriate for the day-today working environment.
"Feet bear the brunt of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders.
The motion then goes on to outline some of the work injury hazards presented by the footwear: "Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems, such as blisters, corns and calluses, and also serious foot, knee and back pain. More needs to be done to raise awareness of this problem."
Indeed, the TUC has even published a guide which outlines, "Heels should have a broad base and be no higher than 4cm (1.5 in) ... if worn for long stretches no higher than 2cm (0.8 inch)."
Contrary to some media reports, the TUC is not suggesting that high heels are banned. There is no suggestion that women will lose the right to choose to wear high heels in working environments where they do not present an immediate hazard. What the union is instead proposing is a ban on high heels being included as a compulsory part of the dress code.
