Asbestos compensation claims for diffuse pleural thickening

When asbestos particles are breathed through the lungs or mouth, they can then become absorbed into the pleura (the layer of membrane surrounding the lungs) and eventually cause scarring, thickening and hardening of this area (a process sometimes referred to as fibrosis) – when this becomes acute it is referred to as diffuse pleural thickening and an asbestos claim may be possible.

Diffuse pleural thickening
It is only when scarring, thickening and hardening of the lungs becomes widespread that it is referred to as diffuse pleural thickening.

In such cases, sufferers' lung function is reduced and they are likely to suffer from breathlessness and a feeling of tightness across the chest.

As well as being a compensable disease in itself because of its restrictive effect on lung function, pleural thickening is also an indicator of asbestos exposure and therefore a sign that the person affected may one day develop further asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma or asbestosis.

Rates of diffuse pleural thickening
Every year in the UK there are hundreds of new cases of pleural thickening registered with the Department for Work and Pensions, although it is thought that the true rate may actually be higher.

Pleural plaques
Pleural plaques are very similar to diffuse pleural thickening, but with one crucial difference – because they occur only in isolated patches with no symptoms (although many disagree with this point) it is not a condition actionable with an asbestos claim.
