Snowmobile and Ski-doo accidents on a snow holiday

For many people who plan a snow holiday their main fear is that they will fall while skiing and be injured in that way, however, there are many other activities to be partaken of during such a getaway and a ski-doo accident may be one eventuality that is not easily foreseen.

Ski-doo or snowmobile - what's the difference
Rather like when many people say, "I'm going to do the hovering", what they mean is they are going to use a vacuum cleaner - Ski-doo is a brand name, made famous by Bombardier Recreational Products, and now used by some as a generic name for all small one and two person snowmobiles.

In Canada, in 1942, Joseph-Armand Bombardier founded the company that would go on to make the original Ski-doo. He began with large tracked snow vehicles and even experimented with propeller driven machines.

But it was his dream to develop a lightweight snowmobile that could carry one or two passengers and travel at high speeds across powder. Bombardier and his eldest son, Germain, developed a number of prototypes and the first Bombardier snowmobile appeared on the market in 1959.

The vehicle was originally supposed to be called the Ski-dog due to Bombardier's intention that it could perform the tasks of sled dogs for trappers and hunters offering a realistic and practical alternative to the sled. But, according to legend, a sign painter misspelled the name and the term Ski-doo was born.

Before long, the recreational attraction of Ski-doo use had become apparent and a subsequent culture of fun-users grew and grew.

Now, no snow holiday is complete without a snowmobile expedition, but, like any motorised vehicle, Ski-doos can be dangerous in the hands of the inexperienced and holiday makers should always have safety in the forefront of their mind when using one or being part of an excursion involving their use, whether as a driver or a passenger.
