The risk from slips and trips and falls from height is very real; in 2008/2009 nearly 15,000 UK workers suffered serious personal injury as a result of these types of work accident.
In fact, according to government figures, more fatal workplace injuries are caused by falls from height than any other type of occupational incident, while slips and trips remain the single largest cause of major, reportable injury.
Of course, the single greatest impact of these incidents is felt by workers and their families, but it would be foolish to underestimate the wider economic and social cost of slips and trips and falls from height; the Health and Safety Executive estimate that slips and trips alone cost the UK economy around £800 million each year.
Indeed, the release of these figures prompted some very serious reflection on the part of the health and safety community. Max Walker, HSE's head of operations in the South West said that figures detailing both the personal and financial cost of these forms of work accident "highlight the very real and serious nature of preventable slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace. Slips, trips and falls might sound funny but they shatter the lives of thousands of British workers every year."
His comments coincided with the launch of the second phase of one the HSE's largest ever safety information campaigns, Shattered Lives.
"Making improvements doesn't need to cost the earth and we are encouraging people to visit the Shattered Lives site, where they will be able to get simple and cost effective solutions to help manage slips, trips and falls hazards in their workplace," Mr Walker said.
The Shattered Lives website, which can be visited here, is full of tools and resources that are likely to be of use to any employer or worker involved in the day to day management of slip and trip, and fall from height risk. Advice is provided on such things as suitable workplace footwear, correct ladder use and the clearing and cleaning of workplace floors.
