Whistler tries to learn from ski lift accident

A ski lift accident can result in serious injury; as such, it is absolutely vital that ski lifts are both regularly inspected and regularly maintained so as to avoid the kind of incident that can result in serious injury and consequent compensation claims.

The reality of this was highlighted in 2008 when the Excalibur lift at one of the world's most popular ski resorts, Whistler in Cnada, was evacuated after the collapse of a tower supporting the cables.

At least one cabin became disconnected from the lift wire, terrifyingly falling to the ground. Several passengers are thought to have suffered back injuries in the ski lift accident, while one man sustained a head injury.

One of those involved explained, "It was pretty freaky. We heard the noise of the tower collapsing and then the cabin started shaking and down it went. It hit the ground. It busted one of the windows and we jumped out."

The safety incident came at a bad time for the resort, with it having just unveiled a new peak-to-peak lift in preparation for the Winter Olympics, which it is due to help host in 2010.

The accident raised many questions, not least among them the quality of safety checks on the Excalibur ski lift system; resort managers said it had only recently had an "extensive" safety inspection.

The incident was not the first time the dubious safety of Whistler lifts has attracted headlines. In 2002 a toddler fell more than 11 metres from a lift. Fortunately, she survived, as snow cushioned her fall.

In addition, in December 1995, four chairs on the Quicksilver chairlift came off their cable, resulting in the death of two holidaymakers.
