Claiming following a blind accident in Scotland

For those who worry about suffering an accident in Scotland, it is reasonable to assume that road accidents, work safety incidents and offshore incidents may be quite high up the list of fears.

However, it is true and shocking that dangers may actually be much closer to home; or, to be precise, in the home.

In 2008 this alarming reality was brought home to a couple in Clackmannanshire, with tragic consequences.

The couple's two-year-old daughter had been waving from a window to her grandmother when she slipped and fell into a looped window blind cord, causing her to be killed and leading her parents to be confronted with what they described as "a vision from hell".

Now, the parents are hoping that others can learn from the tragedy and prevent such an accident in Scotland from ever occurring again.

They told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme, "As with most parents we had covered locks, stairgates all the obvious things. When we had the blind fitted we'd gone to a well-known local company, we wanted a quality service, we wanted a made to measure blind. It never occurred to us it could be dangerous."

"We do not want what happened to us to happen to anyone else and strongly urge people to remove the kind of blinds with cords and replace with non-corded products."

UK-wide, about two children a year die as a result of becoming entangled in blind cords. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is backing the Make it Safe! Campaign and commented, "With blinds already fitted in so many homes, it is important to raise awareness of the danger and how these accidents can be prevented.

"RoSPA is also continuing to work with the blind industry, government and standards bodies at a UK and European level to seek modifications to the design of blinds."
