In 2010, Scottish accident specialists, the Health and Safety Executive, warned of the toll wrought by workplace incidents in Scotland.
At the time of their speaking, they had just reported that 222 people suffer work injury in Scottish accidents each week, resulting in nearly 11,533 deaths and injuries annually.
Indeed, what the figures did not describe though was the vast economic cost caused by work injury and illness. It is estimated that each year in Scotland more than three million working days are lost to illness and injury; something that has a huge impact on the economy.
Like all years in the noughties, 2009 saw millions of pounds in compensation paid out to the victims of workplace accidents in Scotland.
It also saw a landmark victory for Scottish shipyard workers with the condition pleural plaques, something that led to a terrible disparity between asbestos law of north and south Britain.
A leading no win, no fee solicitor explains, "Ever since the change in the law in Scotland we have received a steady stream of enquiries from people in England and Wales who have been diagnosed with pleural plaques and simply don't understand why it is that their former employers are able to admit fault for exposing them to a substance that was known to be highly dangerous, and yet escape having to pay compensation."
In other fields of personal injury litigation, there were millions of pounds paid out to the victims of car crashes, from brain injury sufferers to those with relatively mild injuries, such as whiplash; while in hospital-related cases, there were millions of pounds worth of payouts for medical negligence.
However, with some studies at the time noting vast improvements being made on the Scottish road safety record, it was left to the HSE to speak out about the impact of Scottish work accidents.
Just as with other years, at the onset of 2010, the HSE made a kind of New Year's resolution, "The New Year is an opportune time to reflect on the number of incidents in the past 12 months, and try and stop the same patterns being repeated.
"Slips, trips and falls from height are consistently the chief causes of death and serious injury. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable. We implore businesses to take practical action to manage the risks people face in their day-to-day work," said a spokesperson.
