The 2008 release of Health and Safety Executive figures detailing the toll Scottish workplace accidents claim were met with a mixed response from leading union and safety figures within Scottish industry.
The HSE figures show us that 32 people died in work accidents in Scotland during 2007/2008, with a further 12,000 injured.
Economic costs are considered too, with 3.3 million working days lost to workplace-related ill health. Tellingly, 113,000 workers believe they have a health condition that has been caused or made worse by occupational factors.
The Scottish Trade Unions Congress (STUC) has made it clear that they are concerned about recent cuts in the number of HSE inspectors. Grahame Smith, STUC's general secretary said that the number of inspectors now stood at 182, 24 fewer than existed in 2004.
He commented, "If the government genuinely believes that health and safety is at the cornerstone of our civilised society then we challenge them to forget the deregulatory pleadings of business organisations and resource the HSE to ensure that workplaces are adequately inspected and not wait until death and injury occur before taking action."
Paul Stollard, director the HSE in Scotland made the following statement, "The number of fatal injuries to workers in Scotland continues to cause concern at 32.
"This is little changed on last year but represents a larger proportion of self-employed people who have died as result of their work. Agricultural and construction work are once again the most dangerous.
"The rate of fatal and major injury remains more or less the same. It is strongly influenced by the composition of employment, for example, the mix of industries and occupations in Scotland compared to other parts of Great Britain.
"Falls and being hit by moving objects are some of the main causes. But the rate for all injuries has come down 4% on last year. This is a bit more encouraging."
It remains to be seen whether the Scottish accident claim statistics will reflect this picture.
