Scottish accident claims and targeting road safety during winter

The majority of Scottish accident claims are made for injuries sustained as a result of transport-related incidents on Scotland's roads.

Many strategies exist to try and reduce the incidence of road traffic accidents in the Scotland. Because of the seasonal impact on driving habits and hazards, road safety experts often look to support general safety campaigns with more targeted seasonal-specific road safety drives.

One such is the Winter Safe Journeys campaign, which is run by Central Scotland Police in partnership with Central FM, Diageo and the Automobile Association.

Speaking on the day of campaigns launch in November of 2008, Head of the Road Policing Unit, Chief Inspector Donald McMillan, commented, "Our campaign will focus on the many aspects of road policing that we carry out including drink/drug driving, failing to wear seatbelts, using mobile phones while driving, speeding and young drivers. "This is a partnership approach to get the road safety message across. The whole emphasis is about reducing the number of people injured and killed on our roads."

"We will be out in force over the winter months and we will be taking significant action in relation to road related offences. All drivers involved in collisions, and those stopped for committing a moving traffic offence, will be breath-tested as a matter of routine."

And it seems that the campaign has worked well, with a 29% fall in the number of minor road accident injuries such as whiplash recorded in the previous year. The number of child passenger injuries fell even further, by 64%.

Chief Inspector Donald McMillan comments, "This drop has to be welcomed and we will continue our efforts to reduce the numbers further.

"The focus of this campaign is to reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads. These results are very positive." Ultimately, personal injury solicitors may also find that it reduces the Scottish accident claim rate.
