Celebrating 80 years of SCAP and preventing accidents in Scotland

An accident in Scotland may take one of many forms; a car accident, a work accident, maybe even a slip, trip, or fall, and the Scottish Accident Prevention Council (SAPC) is the national body which involves practitioners, politicians, frontline staff, academics, government, local authorities, health professionals and any other interested parties in the formulation and enhancement of accident prevention policy

In 2010 the SAPC celebrated 80 years of the council's involvement with safety in Scotland.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary the Council decided to implement a National Awards Programme based on best practice, innovation, education and in recognition of those who work in local government, health and the various sectors of business and industry.

The Council recognised the Council Award as being the highest accolade they could bestow and announced that it would be awarded to the project or individual which had made a substantial contribution to safety and accident prevention over a number of years.

Preventing an accident in Scotland - the principal role of the SAPC
According to the Scottish Accident Prevention Council website their role is facilitated by offering the following benefits to members of the Council:

  • access to examples of good practice
  • the offering of support to members
  • opportunities top network
  • opportunities to lobby

The Council states that "accidents occur in a moment, and are usually avoidable. The impact on the individual, the economic and social effect on the family (especially if the main bread-winner is the victim), the curtailment of the future lives of young victims, the burden on health and social services, the long term economic drain through absence from work, are each in themselves sufficient to justify the strongest action".
