No win no fee Scotland and sporting accidents that paralyse

The effects of a spine injury after a Scottish accident can be devastating and the care of such an injury victim may only be fully subsidised by the instigation of a successful no win no fee Scotland compensation claim.

In 2008, concern was raised by a sudden upsurge in Scottish youth rugby accidents causing serious spinal injuries.

A Scottish Rugby Union spokesperson commented that their own reporting revealed that since the early 1950's a total of 14 people had sustained serious long-term injury as a result of the sport and that this would bear comparison to many other sports and outdoor activities.

The Glasgow Herald newspaper reported that for the decade up to and including 2006 the average number of players treated at Scotland's national spine injury unit was one, but that figure increased dramatically from the beginning of 2007.

However, between early 2007 and late 2008, five people, four of them teenagers, received spine injuries whilst playing youth rugby and required treatment at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow. The unit treats the most complex of spine injuries including multiple fractures and cord damage.

Two of the young patients suffered complete paralysis from the level of the injury down. The spine damage left them with little movement in their limbs and both would require constant care if they were not able to be rehabilitated.

The rise in such accidents led to a Scottish Government investigation into the numbers of schoolboys hurt during games and the national spinal injuries unit set up an expert group to analyse the problem.

A director of the unit felt that preliminary findings revealed problems arising when elite athletes in sports such as rugby, climbing and squash were pitted against less talented athletes. In the case of rugby, injury risks were increased especially if players were older or of different weight, build and experience.

The International Rugby Board's "Rugby Ready" initiative aimed to make training safe for all participants of the game and to give coaches the appropriate tools to ensure the safest possible training techniques were put into practice.
