To those who have little interest in road safety statistics, it may come as no surprise to know that a car accident claim in Scotland is most likely to be made after a crash in the heavily-populated area of Strathclyde, however, the region with next-highest toll of victims seeking compensation for their personal injury is Grampian.
This is a slightly surprising statistic because the Grampian region has a much lower population than Strathclyde, which is centred around Glasgow.
It might have been expected that a rural area such as Grampian, where the only city is Aberdeen and much of the remainder of this region comprises mountains and moorland, would have far fewer drivers and, therefore, accidents, but this is not the situation.
Police and other accident investigators have failed to come up with a definitive answer for the regular number of fatal and serious injury crashes which occur but a number of reasons have been put forward.
The major trunk road which runs through the region and links its towns and villages with the remainder of Scotland and south to the English border is the A9. This extremely busy road follows the coast and is used by a mixture of commuters, tourists and commercial vehicles as well as those driven by people who live in the area and travel about on day-to-day business.
If a vehicle accident occurs on this road, traffic is often diverted onto minor roads to ease congestion and these country byways are usually narrow, steep and require particular care when driving along them. Unfamiliarity can be a factor in the cause of accidents as well as speed.
Rural roads are used by farm vehicles for their necessary work but when they travel slowly or take up extra width on a narrow carriageway they can be an extra hazard for car drivers, especially those who are unused to meeting such traffic.
The Scottish government is actively seeking ways of discouraging lorries and other HGVs from the roads across the Highlands by using rail and sea where possible but this is not going to be practical throughout the country and, with the difficult natural terrain, road-building is not a cheap or easy alternative.
The weather in the north-east of Scotland is often also a factor in creating poor conditions for driving which may be more apparent in that area than in the urban regions of the west and south of the country and, as with accidents which happen throughout the UK, driver inexperience often has a part to play in risk-factors which lead to crashes.
