Compensation claims in Scotland could benefit from HSE's "Be Part of the Solution"

As the personal injury solicitors on YouClaim's panel know, accidents at work continue to be a major health and safety issue in Scotland, with 32 workplace fatalities in 2008 alone, while literally thousands of work injury compensation claims were made in the same year.

As a result of this, the Health and Safety Executive sought to reshape its workplace accident prevention strategy for 2009.

All interested parties in Scotland, including both the public and private sectors, were encouraged to contribute their views on the strategy, something that got underway in January with a public consultation held in Glasgow entitled "The Health and Safety of Great Britain - Be Part of the Solution".

Nearly 200 representatives have so far attended the consultation, which will run until 2 March, and all who have participated have shown a determination to reduce the rate of the kinds of accidents that lead to injured workers making compensation claims in Scotland.

Paul Stollard, HSE Director Scotland comments, "I was very struck by how enthusiastic those who came to the event were, to apply the goals of the strategy to Scottish jobs and workplaces.

"Health and safety is deadly serious. Scotland has a terrible record of deaths and ill-health in the workplace and far too many people suffer illness, injury or bereavement. Last year in Scotland, 32 workers were killed and nearly 12,000 seriously injured. Behind each of these statistics there is a personal tragedy, a family harmed, lives damaged.

"We all share the same goal: to prevent death, injury and ill health in our workplaces, but HSE and its Local Authority partners, as regulators for health and safety, cannot do this alone. This is why we are seeking support and involvement from all stakeholders to be part of the solution."
